George Eastman founded the Eastman Kodak Company in 1892. He invented roll film and popularized its use. He designed and started the first mass production of photo cameras. He also was a major philanthropist.
The George Eastman mansion, 900 East Avenue, was built in 1905. Upon his death in 1932, it was bequeathed
to University of Rochester.
In 1948 the University transfered the mansion to the museum.
The George Eastman Museum, the world's oldest museum dedicated to photography, opened to the public in 1949.
